Working meeting // Vorau
In May 2023, as part of the research project, we were able to view our central research object, the Vorau manuscript 276, in original for the first time. For this purpose, we spent a few days in the Augustinian canons' monastery of Vorau (Styria) and compared HS 276 with historical holdings of the monastery library. The thematically as well as aesthetically similar codices serve as important reference objects in order to be able to classify HS 276 regarding its production and to develop an understanding of manuscripts of the 12th century. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Provost Bernhard Mayrhofer and the archivist of Vorau Abbey, Stefan Reiter, who made it possible for us to work with the manuscripts without any complications.
Workshop // Göttweig Abbey
In April 2023, an intensive workshop on "Medieval monastic culture and manuscript studies based on selected examples" took place at Göttweig Abbey (Lower Austria). During the two.day visit, we not only got to know the impressive manuscript and graphic collection of the monastery, but also got a small insight into the monastic way of life: We were able to participate in the monks' choral prayer, which structures the monastic daily routine, and in this way take a glimpse at the enormous influence that the biblical texts had on both spiritual and secular texts (especially of the Middle Ages). In this context, a special thank you goes to Fr. Prior Mag. Maximilian Krenn.
